 DAY 1
Arrival at the hotel in Chianciano Terme: check-in, welcome drink, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2
8 a.m.: breakfast at hotel.
9 a.m.: departure for Castelmuzio, situated on a panoramic hilltop 4 kilometers outside Pienza (in the Crete Senesi), 30 km south of Siena in the heart of the Artistic, Cultural, and Natural Park of the Orcia Valley.
The tour will continues with a visit to Trequanda, a medieval village, which has still today visible remnants of its outer walls and two of the original three entrance portals. It stands on the top of a hill (462 m) in a well maintained natural environment consisting of woods, neat fields of vines, olives and cereal crops; after a visit to an interactive museum, set in a beautiful building in Petroio, which documents each and every phase of the centuries-old tradition of terra-cotta production.
1 p.m.: lunch at the hotel.
3.30 p.m.: guided tour of Monticchiello. A small centre in the heart of the Orcia Valley, whose beauty derives from its geographical position and the harmonious integration of its medieval architecture, and wide, well-proportioned spaces, which give the impression of moving around a great house. Closer examination will reveal many points of interest for the visitor.
Today, an heir to an ancient and long-remembered solidarity is the Teatro Povero, the “Poor Theatre”, a most impressive and clear sign of the town’s vitality, along with the people’s capacity to rediscover and reaffirm themselves in a public space, confronting themes of great contemporary significance. Every year a new production, “written, conceived and directed by the people of Monticchiello” speaks of past, present and future events of this community; most recently born is the Museo del Teatro Popolare Tradizionale Toscano, the “Museum of Traditional Tuscan Popular Theatre”, which functions within the aegis of the Siena Museums. This displays, in a fascinating and innovative exhibition installation, the places, images, sounds and symbols of this artistic form, so deeply rooted in Tuscan tradition.
8 p.m.: dinner at hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY 3
8 a.m.: breakfast at hotel.
9 a.m.. departure for Montepulciano, built along a narrow limestone ridge at 605 m (1,950 ft) above sea level. The town is encircled by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in 1511 for Cosimo I de’Medici.
Inside the walls, the streets are crammed with Renaissance-style palazzi and Churches, but the town is chiefly known for its good local “Nobile” wine.
11.30 a.m.: visit to Montepulciano’s Crociani cellars for wine tasting.
1 p.m.: lunch at hotel. departure.
